On August 6, President Obama signed into law a bill that would provide health care to the nearly 1 million victims of the 30-year water poisoning at the Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune. The tireless work of documentary filmmakers, Ret. MSgt. Jerry Ensminger, the Environmental Working Group and POGO helped get this bill passed.

August started with President Obama signing into law legislation that will provide healthcare for victims of the toxic groundwater contamination at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune. POGO’s Director of Public Policy Angela Canterbury was invited to the White House for the signing. Supporters like you helped us keep the pressure up by signing petitions and sending emails to your Members of Congress. Here’s what Angela had to say after the signing: “After a long and hard-fought battle for truth and justice, those who have suffered will finally have some respite and care. That is the very least that they deserve.”
Another fight POGO recently took up was holding the Navy accountable for spending tens of billions of dollars on a new close-to-shore combat ship that has been riddled with problems, including leaks, engine failures and steering problems. Last week, the Navy announced it has convened a panel of high-ranking officers to study the ships problems, many of which were brought to the forefront by POGO investigator Ben Freeman.
Finally, some Members of Congress have been holding town halls railing against Pentagon spending cuts—parroting the talking points of defense contractors. The scare tactics of threatening massive job losses ignores reality. Even under the unlikely “worst-case scenario” of cuts, Pentagon spending would still equal what it was in the 2006 budget—when there were actually more jobs in the defense industry! You can get the facts in the detailed briefing paper we put together.
I hope you’ve had a wonderful summer.
P.S. I want to thank everyone who donated during our online fundraiser earlier this month. We met our fundraising goal! We had a little fun going after the “Big Money Lobbyist Shark,” but the threat to our democracy is real. If you missed our fundraising appeal, you can still click here to donate.
